For 19 years, attorney Chester Baldwin has defended clients facing DUI charges across Olympia and Western Washington. He began his career on the other side of the courtroom, so he knows how the state builds these cases. He has spent the nineteen years since defending against them.

Start My Free ConsultationBaldwin DUI Defense coasters are appearing on bar tops across Western Washington. Each one covers one aspect of what actually happens during a DUI stop. Scanning two unlocks a special offer, and collecting the full set unlocks a larger one once all seven are out.
As a former Thurston County Rule-9 Prosecutor, Chester gained foundational experience inside a prosecutor's office learning how DUI cases are charged, how evidence is gathered, and how to thoroughly review every aspect of a case from the inside. He's spent the 19 years since on the defense side, putting that perspective to work for clients.
A DUI in Washington triggers two separate processes, a criminal case and an administrative license proceeding. Each has its own rules, deadlines, and consequences. Knowing how they work is the first step toward making informed decisions.
We represent drivers across Western Washington at every stage of the DUI process.

From the moment you reach out, you'll know exactly where your case stands and what's next.
Chester Baldwin is a Washington-based attorney with more than two decades of experience defending clients in DUI and criminal matters. Early in his career, he served as a Thurston County Rule-9 Prosecutor, gaining foundational experience in how the state charges and builds its cases that has informed his defense work ever since.
More than 20 years of criminal court experience have made him fluent in precisely how the state gathers evidence, how field sobriety tests are administered, and how every step of a case can be reviewed thoroughly, and how breath-test results can be challenged. He represents clients across Thurston, Pierce, Mason, Kitsap, Lewis, Grays Harbor, King, Snohomish, Cowlitz, and Clark Counties.
Chester is also a recognized voice in Washington legal and policy circles, appearing regularly on TVW, KUOW 94.9, OPB, and Cascade PBS, and speaking before legislative bodies on issues affecting Washington residents and businesses.
Chester practices across ten counties in Western Washington. Thurston County is our home base, where Chester has practiced for more than 20 years and where his deepest courthouse relationships are.
I was facing a DUI charge and was terrified about what it could mean for my job and my family. Chester took my case, went to work immediately, and got it completely dismissed. His knowledge of how prosecutors build these cases is unmatched. He knew exactly where to attack the evidence. I cannot thank him enough.
After my DUI arrest, I felt like everything I had worked for was suddenly at risk. I had no idea what to expect and was overwhelmed by the possibility of losing my license and facing a criminal conviction. Chester immediately stepped in, answered all of my questions, and made me feel comfortable. He ultimately helped get my charge reduced to negligent driving, which meant I never had to plead guilty to DUI. I couldn't be more grateful for the outcome or the guidance I received throughout the process.
What sets Chester apart is his relationships. He knows the prosecutors, he knows the courts, and he knows exactly how the system works from the inside. Facing both a DUI and a criminal charge, I was in a tough spot, but Chester navigated it with a level of skill and confidence I didn't expect. The outcome was something I never thought possible.

The fine is the smallest number on this page. A Washington DUI is not one bill, it is ten years of them: the interlock, the insurance surcharge, the probation, the days you do not get paid for. Here is the same arrest resolved three different ways.
Amended down from DUI

BAC under .15, no priors
$6,600to $17,300

Ranges, not quotes. Washington statutory minimums plus typical Thurston County and Puget Sound costs as of August 2026; your case lands somewhere in a range, never on a single number. Defense costs are left out of the totals, since you pay them either way: a first-offense DUI defense in Thurston County generally runs $5,000 to $9,000.
And three things the dollar figures do not show
Washington law flatly bars vacating a DUI conviction. A negligent driving conviction reduced from a DUI can be vacated, but only after ten clean years. That is the real ten-year line on this page.
RCW 9.96.060
A DUI disqualifies a CDL for one year, three if hazmat was aboard, and for life on a second. It counts the same whether you were driving a truck or your own car off duty.
Washington Department of Licensing
Priors count seven years at sentencing, and as of January 1, 2026, fifteen years for felony DUI. The third column is not the ceiling. It is the step before one.

Which column you land in is mostly decided early. Evidence gets preserved or lost in the first weeks, and the seven-day license hearing deadline runs whether or not anyone tells you about it. A conversation costs nothing.
